Disney officially confirmed rumours Saturday night at the San Diego Comic Con that the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror will be closed to make way for a new attraction based on the franchise "The Guardians of the Galaxy". The announcement was coupled with concept art and preliminary details on what to expect in the new attraction slated to open within a year. |
The new attraction, called "Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: BREAKOUT" will take guests through a museum made up of specimens and artefacts gathered by The Collector, including the Guardians of the Galaxy themselves. Rockett, the mischievous raccoon, has escaped and is enlisting the help of visiting VIPs (park guests) to board gantry lifts and help him rescue his friends in display boxes hanging over an abyss. Imagineers describe this experience as "a comically high-energy, rocking new adventure" saying it will include humour and music similar to its namesake movies.
Right now, the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is slated to close in early 2017 with Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: BREAKOUT opening "summer 2017", many are guessing in time for the D23 Expo in July or the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiere in May. This new attraction will be an anchor for more future Marvel presence in Disney California Adventure over the coming years.
To say that fan reaction is mixed would be an understatement. Most feelings have been negative and many are worried about what this means for the future of Hollywood Land in DCA which, though thematically confusing, is home to classics and favourites such as Frozen - Live at the Hyperion, "Turtle Talk with Crush", Disney Junior - Live on Stage or Monsters Inc.: Mike & Sulley to the Rescue. I would be lying if I said I wasn't among those nay-sayers, but we're interested in what you think of the news. Do you think this is a welcome change to the parks or is Disney California Adventure losing its California altogether?
