One of the most iconic shows at the Disneyland Resort, Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular has been dazzling and entertaining audiences at Disney California Adventure for over ten years. It's been so popular that it helped spawn the successful Aladdin broadway musical which opened only a short while ago. Sadly, Disney has announced that this long time favourite will be coming to an end shortly. |
Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular opened at the Hyperion Theatre in then Hollywood Pictures Backlot on 16 January 2003. It's the third show to play in the over 2,000 seat theatre since California Adventure opened in 2001. The first two offerings fared so poorly with guests and critics that Disney was desperate for a hit show to fill the stage, and so Aladdin was born to live theatre!
Since its premier it has had almost 14,000 performances and has been one of the most popular offerings at Disney California Adventure. With such a loved following it was sad to hear from Disney Parks Blog that the show will be closing after its final performance on 10 January 2016. There's still plenty of time to see it if you're visiting soon, but be aware that the Hyperion Theatre will be empty from January until the summer as they get ready for a new Frozen stage musical to take its place.
As much as I love Aladdin and have always enjoyed the fresh humour the Genie frequently brought to the show, it's now been almost 16 years since it began and, like all good things, deserves a rest. It would be different if the Broadway musical hadn't already opened and been such a hit, but I'm excited for something fresh to be coming to DCA and the entire resort, especially at a time when many attractions are closing in preparation for Star Wars land. If you are a fan as I am, get your fill while you can. In the meantime, I'm looking forward to Frozen.
