Bob Chapek, chairman of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, revealed yesterday at the D23 Expo even more exciting details of the Star Wars-themed lands coming to both the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts in 2019. We now know details of the atmosphere of the area, the background story, aspects of the new attractions, and the name of the land itself (nope, it's not actually Star Wars Land...). The good news? Fans of the classic Star Tours are in for a great surprise! |
The Story
It's official: the name of the new land is Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge. The world of the new addition is one never seen before in any film or series because it's (you guessed it) at the edge of the galaxy. It's a forgotten port now frequented by bounty hunters, those trying to escape the First Order, thieves, and even some members of the Resistance. There are two distinct areas of the land: the city and the encampment. In the city, you can find most of the shopping and dining destinations including the cantina and an outpost where the proprietor is happy to sell or trade any of his most unique and valuable goods for the right price. This is also the area where you'll find the Millennium Falcon. More on that later. The encampment is home to some Resistance fighters who are trying to band together to defeat the First Order amid the ruins of the old city. This outpost is where guests will be able to fight against the First Order themselves. |
The Attractions
To fight the First Order, you'll have to travel inside a Star Destroyer - a truly massive environment that they are working on for Galaxy's Edge.
It is now confirmed that guests will have the opportunity to pilot the Millennium Falcon and handle the controls, similar to the Mission: SPACE attraction in Florida. Every person in the cockpit will be given a specific task to perform to make their mission a success. All of this comes about because you've become involved with a deal between Hondo (of Star Wars Rebels fame) and Chewbacca, so you might want to be careful who finds out about it because if the Falcon gets a bit banged up, you may end up on a bounty hunter's list.

The Characters
As we've mentioned, you'll see Chewbacca around, but you'll also be able to encounter BB-8 and many characters from the First Order as well - like a new home for Kylo Ren, maybe? Fans of the classic Star Tours attraction will be excited to hear of the return of Captain Rex (from the cockpit), only this time he's the DJ at the cantina, so what could possibly go wrong? |
There's a lot of new and exciting stuff coming our way for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, but we still have to wait until 2019. Want one more piece of good news? Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland will be the first to open, with Florida's coming later that year! What are you most stoked to see and do?
